Dog Training Software Migration Checklist

October 17, 20266 min read

Moving business records is a project. Before switching dog training software, decide what must move, what should be archived, who will verify it, and how you will keep active client work from falling through the gap.

Before exporting

  • List the records you use: clients, dogs, active programs, appointments, balances, agreements, session history, homework, and attachments.
  • Ask the current provider what export formats, fields, attachments, and date ranges are available. Confirm any limits or fees directly with them.
  • Identify duplicates, incomplete records, former clients, and information you no longer need. Do not move data simply because it exists.
  • Assign a migration owner and set a cutover date that gives the team time to check the result.

During the move

  1. Keep an untouched export as a restricted backup.
  2. Import a small, representative sample first.
  3. Check names, dog links, dates, time zones, balances, attachments, and ownership against the source.
  4. Record fields that need manual entry and decide who will complete them.
  5. Tell staff which system is authoritative during the transition; avoid editing the same record in two places.

After cutover

Reconcile active appointments and unpaid balances, test staff access, confirm client-facing settings before enabling them, and keep the old system available only as long as your contract and retention policy permit. Protect exports containing client information and delete temporary copies when they are no longer needed.

Ask any prospective platform to explain its import process and what it does not import. The comparison guide includes questions to use in that conversation.
